Simply eating protein isn't enough. You need to trigger the physiological "switch" that tells your body to build muscle. This switch is controlled by an amino acid called Leucine.
Research shows that to flip this switch, a meal needs to contain roughly 2.5g to 3g of Leucine. In real food terms, this equates to about 25g–35g of high-quality protein. Once this threshold is met, MPS (Muscle Protein Synthesis) spikes for about 3 hours before returning to baseline—even if amino acids are still present in the blood. This is known as the "muscle full" effect.
Eating 10g of protein here and there (e.g., a handful of nuts or a weak yogurt) often fails to reach the Leucine threshold. While the calories count, the anabolic signal does not fire. This is why 3-4 distinct meals are superior to constant grazing for muscle retention.
You may have heard the body can only absorb 30g of protein at once. This is false. Your body will absorb almost all the protein you eat. However, the anabolic benefit caps out around 30-50g per meal. Anything excess is simply used for energy or other bodily functions, but it won't build extra muscle.
